Challenge Success: Building Your Path

On Saturday, April 8th approximately 500 students, alumni and some parents descended upon the La Cañada High School campus for the first ever Challenge Success: Building Your Path. This event was jointly sponsored by the LCHS Alumni Association and La Cañada High School and included two keynote speeches – one each by Academy Award-winning director Chris Buck and Dr. Mark Urata, renowned plastic surgeon from USC and CHLA. Following the keynote speeches were three ½ hour sessions with approximately 35 speakers from a variety of professions including Science & Technology, Medicine, Business, Entertainment, Law, Engineering, Finance, Aviation, Real Estate, the Arts and Sports. A free lunch was provided for all participants by gracious sponsor Jersey Mikes and the afternoon included intimate mentoring sessions with many of the presenters.

“This was a win-win for our current students and alumni,” says LCUSD Governing Board member and organizing committee member Brent Kuszyk. “We have heard outstanding feedback from all who attended.” Some highlights include when Chris Buck emphasized that “people regret more what they didn’t do than what they did.” He spoke of being fired one time from an animation project and the learning from that experience. Many of the presenters had varied and diverse pathways to their current levels of success. Dr. Mark Urata spoke about his career path involving medical school, dental school and numerous residencies in plastic surgery. He showed detailed photos of a 26-hour successful surgery separating two conjoined twins – one who now attends La Cañada High School.

Kevin Tsujihara, CEO of Warner Brothers, emphasized that his greatest learning experience in his younger years was from his time working on a technology start-up, which eventually failed. Michael Yang, technology entrepreneur and engineer, highlighted the importance of learning to use computer code. LA Philharmonic oboist Marion Kuszyk spoke of her initial rejection by the LA Philharmonic and how she “crashed” the audition uninvited, which eventually led to her being hired. John Petersen, COO of PS Business Parks (a publicly traded company,) spoke about the basics of setting yourself apart by being on time and having the right attitude.LCUSD Superintendent Wendy Sinnette, who was highly involved with the organizing committee, commented: ”The event highlighted the immense professional talent in our district and enabled students to see that the path to success is unique and individualized. “When we narrowly define the path to success, we limit opportunities for discovering our true passions.”

Jenna Milbrodt, an LCUSD 7th grader who attended the event, responded when asked about her experience at the event: “Challenge Success really helped me plan a better future for myself. Mr. Plocher’s (Managing Partner at Northwestern Mutual) presentation on goal setting was interesting and showed me the importance of writing down my goals.”La Cañada High School and the LCHS Alumni Association are planning to present the event every other year as a way to enhance the students’ and alumni experience in exploring career opportunities.
